Is this possible and could it work.
External HDD+Blu Ray drives dual usb adaptor-laptop.
My i3 laptop has two USB's -currently my Asus external drive uses both USB ports -one for Data+one for power.
Is it possible I could use a dual usb adaptor to connected both blue ray power+external hdd.
I have used powered hub's before, is this going to be another powered hub or standalone dual usb adaptor.

Does the Asus drive definitely not work with just the 'data' USB connector plugged in? The type of cable you describe is for situations where one USB port can't supply enough power. The 'data' connector will transfer power as well and may be enough on its own.

No it hardly spins up at all with single usb-I almost thought I'de wasted a purchase.
The dual cable is also mentioned in Asus instructions-just unfortunate it wasn't posted.
I can since load and write som blu rays.
Though lack storage space to upload a few movies including some DVD's.
I since searched for possible wireless solution though seems those require usb as well though if a drive could be used via WiFi only after setting up with usb then that could free up both USB ports again.
Other option could be to install a larger ssd from existing 128gb
Though have only done that with previous Mac book not win10 laptop.

This is what I needed from amazon for Asus external drive.

Now I'm not sure if I could add a usb hub to include both blue ray and external hdd.
I know from MacBook and western digital external 500gb hdd -a powered hubs was required from AirPort Extreme router. Which did work though initially failed with non powered usb hub.
If I could purchase the hub again it's 15 pounds approx from curry's and I'll choose an inexpensive external hdd.
Alternatively allow lots of time to re consider building a desktop -though quite some time off yet.

Haven't read the thread but wouldn't it be a good idea to buy a powered hub?

Hi that one is powered I've usd it before with 13" macbook and external hdd +airport extreme.not to confuse the original board.
    Anyway I've since re connected Asus external writer which uses two usb 3 sockets;
Though since my earlier post I've managed to check and I since have on Type C usb socket on laptop.
I'll not need a hub at all -if the type C socket can run enough power for an external hdd.

Considering today's discovered usb type c 3.0 connection on i3 laptop.
Think this is the solution for blu ray/dvd backups.
