Carers Allowance

Hi, Just wondered if anyone can help. My partner is reg disabled and I'm basically a carer, I have been told that i can claim carers allowance. I just wondered who pays the carers allowance, and is it payment basically taken from my partners benefit to then pay me? if you know what I mean.
Thanks everyone for your help.

    The basics

It's paid by DWP and will not "be taken" from your partner's benefits.

Does your partner receive a qualifying benefit? Being registered disabled doesn't count on it's own
  • Thanks NeilCr, my partners gets disability and ESA. Didn't want my partner to lose money if I did claim.

As the link suggests it can be complicated (not always!) so might be worth a trip to your local CAB or advice agency to talk this through and check on other benefits.

Do you claim ESA as a couple? If so then yes it's deducted £1 for £1 from the ESA and then a carers premium is added. Carers Allowance then pay you separately.

If you're not claiming ESA as a couple because you're not living together, does your partner live alone?
