HASTINGS charging over £600 for 'changes'.

I've received an email detailing a policy change stating that my annual mileage is going to increase and I will be charged over £600 when I have already paid the full insurance amount I full.
My initial mileage was 5,000 and they have increased it to 12,000, I wouldn't be using the car this much hence why I didn't set such a high mileage initially.

Any advice would be appreciated on how I can rectify this as I don't have the funds, nor think I should have to pay this amount.

Thanks in Advance

So you have a black box or telematics policy. You initially declared an annual mileage of 5000 but have already used most of this. Hastings have looked at your current usage and calculated forward that if the current pattern continues you will use 12,000 miles over the year the policy is in force.

Had you declared 12,000 miles at the start of your policy your cost to insure would have been £600 higher.

If this is a blackbox telematics policy this would have been clearly explained in the terms and conditions you agreed when taking out the policy. You did read them didn't you.

Your only option is to pay the £600 or stop driving the car until the current period of insurance ends.

Another thing to be wary of is your declared usage of the car. If you are traveling to work make sure you have cover for commuting as they can see where your common journeys take you to.

See if you can pay in installments.

If its a black box policy are you sure it's the right policy for you.
  • That’s the thing, I DONT have a black box! So they’ve put the mileage up for no reason at all.
  • Nor do I have a telematics box, I paid so much for my initial insurances so I could avoid these boxes.

Have you told them your mileage will be 12000?
Based on current usage how many miles do you expect to do annually?
  • No I have always stated it would be 5,000 and I would only use this amount

So for the avoidance of doubt, how far into your policy year are you and what mileage have you done?

If you haven't told them your mileage is increasing then have you asked them why they have increased it?

Have you been 'playing' on comparison sites getting quotes for a higher mileage?

Have you had an MOT recently? The mileage may be taken from that and compared to the previous one, shows it is more than 5000? This data is electronic and easily available.

Have you used a comparison site recently and input 12,000 in there?
Some providers compare data input on comparison sites for inconsistencies.

Ask them why they think your mileage will be 12,000 this year.
  • I'm less than 3 months into my policy, had MOT when I bought the car which was less than 3 months ago.
