It would be against the RIBA code of professional conduct if they are RIBA registered, I think it would be very unlikely for a good architect to risk doing this for a small referral fee.

However, it's also against my membership's policy and it doesn't stop offers from various manufacturers for referral fees though it is obviously wrong to do so - so I'm sure it does happen, and there will always be some less honest people accepting these.

Start by working out if the professional is on the level - if they are honest, then a recommendation is worth exploring.

Just to add to ComicGeek's post. All architects are required to be registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Not all architects are members of the RIBA as they are not required to be.

However the ARB Architects Code states the following:
Where you make or receive any payment or other inducement for the introduction or referral of work, you should disclose the arrangement to the client or prospective client at the outset.

So no architect is likely to accept any referral fees because if they did and were found out they could be struck off the register and face a fine.

And that's all assuming that they are actually an 'architect' and not an architectural technician or any other form which doesn't require registration with ARB.
