Amex Gold Card Fee

I'm coming up to the end of my first year, and will have to pay to use my Gold American Express card for a 2nd year. The cost is £140.

Just wondering if any of you have chosen to continue with it and pay for it after the initial free year?

I've made close to 100,000pts but can't imagine getting anywhere near that in year 2, especially with no welcome bonus this time round.

I'm struggling to see how I can get value out of this card over one of the free cashback cards. I will use the 2 lounge visits, but they're only worth ~£20 each but not sure I'd pay that if I didn't have the card anyway, so the value to me is less than that in reality. I'll probably never use the Amex Travel site, as it's always more expensive than other sites, even if you include the free $75 hotel credit. Other than that, the benefits are pretty much the same as the free amex cards?

Just can't see how I can get £140s worth of value out of the card.

If you kept it, how did you justify the cost, did you get over £140s worth of value? If you got rid of the card, what did you do with the pts you earned?

  • I’ve found the Amex travel site to be considerably cheaper if of equal price on most occasions.

I’m still on my first year and will probably pay to renew it and probably get a platinum card as I tend to travel a lot with work and book my own flights and hotels and expense it back.

So for me it’s worth it.

If you just want points either apply for the rewards credit card or go for the platinum or green change card

I guess if you can put work travel on it - it would be worth it.

Unfortunately I have to book most work travel/hotels through a travel site, rather than expensing it. Just had a look and thought the hotel credit was once per year, didn't realise it was every time. Will start comparing the prices there more often then. Whenever I've checked before, they've always been significantly more expensive.
