Ive dropped them an email. Ive asked if i can send a picture of the receipt rather than calling in. If i went in it would cost me a few quid to get home on the train so wouldn't actually save much
  • Alternatively you could ask the pub to let you have a free drink next time you're in. I know that doesn't address the cause of the issue but it may be suitable.

When this happened to another forumite, it was suggested (for the future) that they log in to their bank account as soon as a decline happens to see whether it is in fact showing as pending. If it does, you just show it to the retailer there and then.

I suppose these are the times when something like tandem credit card or monzo debit card come in useful as the notifications pop up on your phone in real time

I had a similar problem with a self service train ticket machine. The software in the machine froze and then timed out (crashed) while the payment was being authorised (Apple Pay). It looks like the bank thought it was approved (and took the money) but as the authorisation message didn’t reach the machine no ticket was printed.

I got a printout from the office behind the ticket desk saying “declined” but after the money was taken I called up John Lewis Financial Services (twice after they failed to do anything the first time around) they refunded it as a gesture of goodwill. It clearly wasn’t worth the admin of doing the full chargeback.

I no longer use the self service machines and always go to the counter.

This shouldn't have happened but if you provide your bank with a copy of the void receipt they should be able to sort it out without too much difficulty.
