We have literally hundreds of starling on our lawn (the cats are just sitting in the conservatory watching them - totally confused) - the birds are eating grubs of some kind - but what kind ?
Leatherjackets appear in September

What grubs could be the food in spring ?

There will be plenty of invertebrates there - chafer grubs, worms, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, etc. Turn over a bit of turf and see what you can find.

Lucky you, we barely see one a week. We have the new Starling called Jackdaws, noisier and just as bolshie.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
