You can run your own load test by switching off everything and watching the reading,if anyone was linked into you it would obviously be after the meter and that would be very unlikely.

These meters have been installed widely.and a decision for them to be adopted into the DCC network or not can be read in the above post.

My meter wasn't charging me anything for electricity and the supplier only became aware on contacting and it still took a week to have the data sent to the meter. Also there can be differences between what is on the inhome display and the meter too. They should be able to see usage at their end thats one of the ideas of being smart and ask them to monitor it/check its functionality also.

Thanks MichaelW. Interesting to know that's what the load test entails. I'll have a read of the links you've sent, thanks. I have asked Eon to check from their end but they say they can only see what the main meter reading is (the IMP kwh) and nothing else. They're not much help really!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes the actual meter reading is 4106 Imp kwh. No have just turned everything off to see what it read. Will try putting the kettle on and see what it says. Trouble is being a flat the meters are all in a cupboard in the foyer all together so it isn't easy to check!

Invite a friend over for the afternoon, make them coffee and ask them to drink it in the foyer. :rotfl:

Call their mobile and ask them to watch your meter while you switch things on and off.

You should be able to use your circuit breaker to isolate things such as heating, cooker and lighting. Perhaps check things than use sockets one room at a time.
  • When the smart meter was fitted last October do you remember if the power in your flat went off. If this happened then I can't see your meter being mixed up with another flat. I think as part of the meter change the technician would have checked to make sure the power was off.

You've not mentioned how you heat your flat. It might not seem relevant now due to the weather but the meter was installed just before winter and 4000 odd units over 5/6 months isn't excessive when you've got electrical heating.

Have you started taking daily readings as I'd expect your usage to be low at the moment.

Hi, have been going backwards and forwards with my supplier since my smart meter was installed last October. Since then the meter is reading over 4000kwh for a small flat with hardly any usage. They have said to take readings over 7 days and also turn the power off and see what the meter says.

Can anyone please advise what all the menu options (on the actual smart meter in the cupboard) mean. It says IMP Kwh, EXP kwh, IMP Kvah, EXP Kvah, CREDIT, USING NOW, £ NOW.

Does using now and £ now actually mean what I'm using at the very moment or is it over a certain time period. Reason is that when the power was turned off at the trip switch the meter was reading 24kwh using now.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

It's an EON smart meter. No gas, just electric. This is the reading on the actual digital meter itself. Don't use the in-house display as it won't reach the meter in the flat foyer from my flat - too far away. I turned the main trip switch off in the flat.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated. I asked Eon to see if they knew about the menu options and the representative from Eon said that you should be pressing 6 on an electric meter, not 9 (which is for gas meters apparently - this goes against anything I've read but there we are). The menu 6 options are even more confusing what they are listing!

This morning and yesterday morning the meter was reading 37 kwh usage now. Where to go from here really, Eon said that if I thought the meter was faulty I'd have to pay for a load test!
Would this show up if someone else's supply was linked to ours by mistake though? Or anything else that could be causing the high readings?

    Thanks :)

Hello Becca22 and sorry for the late reply. Only just spotted your question.

A very similar question came up last year and my colleague, Helena, did a lot of research into it at the time. This included speaking at length to one of our meter technicians. They advised at the time:

'If this secure electricity meter was installed by Eon, ours are the only ones where you must press 6 four times, every other suppliers secure meters use button 9 (don’t ask me why).

If you press 9 on OUR secure electricity meters, it shows a WAN reading (wide area network) which is basically just the signal but it does look like a reading.

It looks from the customers query that it is one of ours so it will definitely be 6 four times for the correct reading and it's the first piece of information which comes up and ends KWH.'

The full thread is at the following link.

As this very same issue was raised over eight months ago, is it not pathetic of eon that the nowhere on your website are users informed that it is necessary to press key 6 four times to read the Secure electric meter fitted by eon?

No update to the thread that you have quoted was ever posted as promised.

If the eon version of this meter is different this needs highlighting, so that customers do not waste their time giving incorrect readings.

Why is there no a user guide that can be downloaded from your website?

Your online assistant is unaware that it is necessary to press key 6 four times:

While yes information on how to read the meter should be on suppliers sites all the same meters are the same.

However meters these days are nothing but simple computers and can be programmed in any way the supplier see's fit.

This helps brgni down meter costs by having the same meter used in many situations.

It you want standards blame the government that just said do this somehow but we won't tell you how. (Labour and Tony I believe were in power at the time but I may be wrong).

Additional: Though to be fair no subseqnat Govenment has decided to impliment it better. Standards help. Imiagine CD or DVD if there were multiple formats competing of just a free for all (like is here). (not really comparible markets but you understand the pain!)

Hello thorganby and I know where you're coming from.

There's very little on our website about individual makes of smart meter. This is partly because we've used several different manufacturers over the years of which Secure is one.

Things have moved on and the current wave of SMETS2 meters we're installing are made by companies other than Secure.

One reason for smart meters is they save customers having to take readings themselves as we receive them automatically. As such, there's not a great demand from our wider customer base for this information. Totally understand, most MSE users like to read their own meters and this can still be done. As I say, this isn't always the case with many of our customers.

Each smart meter comes with an In-Home Display and readings can be seen on there too. On installation, our technicians set up the display and show customers how to use them. There's more information about these on our website.

Both Helena and I have raised issues around improving the information available via the website and continue to do so. Given the above, until demand grows, there are no plans to include details of the Secure meters at this time. Should things change, we will update at this point.

Are you saying that your IHDs show the actual gas meter reading & not just the kw usage?

    Afternoon badmemory.

I've been talking primarily about electric meters in this thread. Both my replies and those from Helena in the linked thread have been about pressing button 6 four times to see readings. This relates to Secure smart electricity meters installed by us only. It's different on gas meters.

We've supplied several different makes of In-Home Display over the years. Some show gas readings in cubic meters, some in kWh (with a note warning as to accuracy due to gas conversion factors) and some not at all. It depends which one it is.

Sorry I can't be more specific badmemory.
