Your Home Made Perfect, BBC 2

Any thoughts on this new series?

A bit different to the usual home improvement shows, as it is virtual reality and clever designs, brought to life.

Just watched last nights first episode and was worth seeing how imagination, can actually evolve.

I haven't managed to watch it yet, but will have a look now.

We recently had the amazing pleasure of seeing our new kitchen in virtual reality. I have good vision for a space, but it was mind blowing to be able to genuinely explore it, to walk around and open everything up.

The designer even put the piece of art I'd been given for my birthday up on the wall in full scale!

  • I think it was actually quite a good episode. It very much focused on the design of the spaces and not the build process. I think a bit more of a balance would have been nice.

Nonetheless I was really pleased they chose the architect they did as I felt it was a lot more interesting than the other and responded to the clients needs a lot more.

What I do hope the show does is promote architects a bit more and hopefully explains that we do/ can do is a bit more than just draw a box on to the back of peoples houses!

Home improvement combined with virtual reality?! I suppose property viewings are going this way,
so why not renovation work? Very interesting, I'll give this a watch so thanks for sharing :)

Is it just me or does anyone else think that property done with the split levels and steps for the couple with 3 kids, one toddler, was incredibly impractical and dangerous?

How could you take your eyes off a young child when around every corner there are steps and potential drops? Plus I would seriously need to get some blinds up on the giant windows. It may be a novelty now but I guarantee within weeks they will be regretting that!

Totally agree, as it's EXACTLY what I thought!

It was a good product and i liked the architect, himself, but the other option would have been more of a sensible choice, for their family needs.

Only real thing that annoyed me , just a bit, was all the arm waving gestures from architects and presenter.

I am not a parent but I previously worked in lifestyle healthcare, so this is my take on it. :o

That property had two level changes adjacent to the regular stairs, which you would keep a toddler away from anyway. The biggest level change (concealed bed) had a concealed door leading to the kitchen/ dining/ living area.

Many homes have regular stairs, a couple of steps at the front door or the back door, or steps in the garden. Plus kids can climb onto/ fall off furniture (bed, dining chair, sofa). A parent might discourage running up or down the split levels, just as they might discourage climbing on furniture.

But society now can coddle children, to the point they are not sufficiently active for basic health. Moving up and down levels is normal and natural. Balancing whilst moving is a skill that we should learn when very young, but can easily lose through being sedentary.

Children are not necessarily at the greatest risk of injury during a fall: they are more flexible than adults, their bones tend to be stronger. I would be more concerned about any great grandparents, who might now be in their eighties or nineties.

    HTH. :)

The comment about the levels made me want to watch it.

But now I'm laughing at the poor couple's rubbish acting! You do have to wear the VR goggles to see it, not stand in front of a green screen, pretending. They must have had to film those bits separately.

I thought it was an outstanding piece of design!

Kids don't stay young forever and they are resilient little things - they'll only fall once before they realise something isn't good for them.

That house has so much more versatility and longevity for them as a result of what's been done. Completely incomparable to the other design. A modest house with grand designs.
