As some of you know, I'm very new to growing anytihng, other than weeds
I'm going to make a couple of planters to grow our own vegetables, mainly carrots, beetroot etc. They're going to be about 2m square, made from treated 3x2" timber.
What depth would they need to be to grow carrots and beetroot please?
I've asked a similar question a while ago about bedding plants, but this is purely for vegetables

I grow beetroot in my raised bed, which is 30cm deep. Not sure about carrots, I don't grow them as they are so cheap, and I have restricted space so I go for stuff that's more expensive to buy, or more fun than boring old carrots/onions/spuds. I'd say 30cm should be ok for miniature carrot varieties though.
Beetroot are dead easy to grow too, for a beginner. Last year I planted them straight out as seeds into the raised beds and got a good crop. This year I'm starting them indoors and transplanting, but that's only as I now have a potting shed. I'm still a winging-it gardener, planting stuff and hoping for the best!
Forgive me for sticking my oar in here, but one thing I'd say about 2x2m planters is that you won't easily be able to reach the middle without treading in them. Especially if you only have access from one side. Mine are 3.6m x 1m and against the garden fence, and I find it hard to reach to the far side, although I'm only a shade over 5 ft tall.
Depending on the space you have available I'd really think about a different shape.0 -

We have a 6 feet by 18" by 12" deep freestanding planter - currently filled with carrots and radish - they were planted 3 weeks ago and the radish will be ready for picking in 2 or 3 weeks time
The carrots are just shoots at the moment - but should be fine at this depth - they are in compost !
I would say that beetroot would be fine at this depth too.
Just pick them when they are small and sweet.0
