Anyone know about 'privacy' bathroom door handles?

I have a regular handle on my bathroom door.
But I'd like to swap it for a locking one.
However, as I'm renting and have no tools or DIY skills, I want a handle I can lock by pressing a button or turning a knob, which stops the handle turning, rather than sliding a 'bolt' into the door frame.
I can change the handles but I can't change the bit inside the door that goes into the frame.
I'm not sure what these locks are called or how to find a suitable one offline or online.
This is what I have now:

So I guess I need to find a handle that has the two bits going through it that are the same size as the two holes in the door already?
Then I turn the lock bit and it stops the handle moving.
Any tips on finding such a thing?
I've asked in a few local shops and they don't have them.
Thanks.

From what i know youve got two options.
Get a privacy knob and use the existing locking mechanism. Youll need to fill and tidy up the hole below. (Edit the ones im seeing seem to include a new mechanism which suggest that the locking mechanism has something which helps with the locking, i presumed it wouldve been handled in the know if that makes sense but looks like you might need to change the locking mechanism, if it the same size, itll be straight forward, longer, youll need to drill a bit more out of the door.)
Get a privacy handle and buy a new locking mechanism. No covering up of whole required (might nieed adjustment for sizing) but you will need to take a chunk out of where the locking mecahnism will need to go.
Presumably the hole at the bottom is currently unused? It looks liek there might have been a locking mechanism at one point hence the hole but it looks too tidy on the end to have been patched up so guessing it was drilled and then just never used.
Id go with the privacy knobs, fill the hole and paint.0 -
I just Googled "Privacy set" which seems to be what you are looking for. Going by the two holes in your picture it's had one on before.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Thanks! That's thrown up some potentially good options.
Need to find some with the dimensions on, showing what the distance between the two holes needs to be.0 -
This looks like a possible option, although it depends on the distance between the two holes:

Victorian Scroll Door Privacy Set - Polished Brass - 1 Pair SKU: 100901
Does anyone know how these work? How does turning the lower switch stop the handle from moving - it doesn't seem to be attached to anything?

There's usually some sort of cam that just gets in the way of the handle mechanism when in the locked position. It will all be behind the faceplace. This looks like a possible option, although it depends on the distance between the two holes:

Would a rubber door wedge not do the job? Pushing it under whilst in the bathroom, could stop accidental openings, but maybe not a determined shove.
Who are you locking out, lodgers, guests??How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)0 -
Surely you need the permission of the Landlord to do this as they might want a different style or their joiner to do it rather then letting the tenants do it.0

Presuming the landlord or his workmen did the paintwork on the door, might be better to get absolutely anyone else but them to fit the lock if that's their standard of work...0 -
I save calling the landlord for serious problems only as it's best not to annoy them too much or its time to move on...
I can't afford to move again at the moment so best to keep the 'lord happy as much as possible and let them enjoy their five figure rental income from this house in peace.
Plus I can always swap the handle back when I leave.Presuming the landlord or his workmen did the paintwork on the door, might be better to get absolutely anyone else but them to fit the lock if that's their standard of work...
Haha - it wasn't me, that's for sure!
But we have had a few jobs done by people the landlord has arranged to come in and do them and they've not been great.
I'm not sure if 'trades people' are just generally !!!! or that they do a bad job when they know they are doing a buy-to-let house as the tenants won't complain and the landlord won't see.
I've ordered a few handles so will see which ones fit.
Thanks for all the help.0 -

Yeah perhaps.
Guests and their kids mainly. Locking them in/us out.
Last thing I need when I'm washing my todger in the bidet is for a load of kids to come running in.0
