SSE defy logic

As we all know(?!) energy companies are fond of direct debits because a monthly payment allows for differences between summer (surplus) and winter (drought). Logical.
So it was a shock, in January, to be told I was to be refunded a surplus and my D/D would reduce by £45. Illogical.
Now the winter is over(ish), my account is now more than £600 in debt.
It defies any strict logic I can understand, though I do recognise a surplus should be returned - but mid-winter!?

I've been battling with SSE over this same issue for many years.
Apparently they told me that "by law" they have to refund any credit balances. I have explained to them time and time again that I (and I'm sure other customers) like to build up a credit balance in order to have something to go towards winter bills when energy will be used more.
The way round it I eventually found was to cancel my DD but set-up a standing order instead which they agreed to. This was, any credit amount cannot be refunded.0 -

I'm not sure why your putting so much effort into paying them more money than they want?. Just put the money into the highest interest account you can find and then pay them as required when usage goes up. I prefer to have as little credit in the energy companies as possible and all the money in my bank because it's much easier to deal with any issues.0
