Ticking Noise Vauxhall Astra

Hi all,

I am running a 2008 Astra as a cheap runaround, 107k miles and counting, well looked after. I have a ticking noise coming from the engine that only becomes more frequent when I rev. I am thinking this may be the timing/cam belt but not so sure? Last serviced and MOT some time last year, had to get a few bits done but nothing major. Been a solid motor.

Any ideas?

tappets/cam followers possibly...wouldn't worry too much if it ticks a bit

Ah, thank you. I am more curious than anything else, will keep an ear on it anyway.

Tappets as above, common issue in Vauxhalls once you start getting towards 100k. Not going to break down any time soon. Not sure of the exact cost but I'd have thought you'd have change out of a couple of hundred quid or so.

  • Could be timing chain, which engine is it?
  • Try some of this:

But do an oil change 300 miles after putting it in. Its best not left in for too long as while good for hydraulic tappets, it is not so good for bearings.

Thanks all, really useful. I've read good things about the Wynns's cleaner so won't hurt giving that a shot for £9!

Engine wise it's a 1.8 Petrol (automatic transmission)

Only looking to run the car until August time so it's not a big issue (I have breakdown cover etc just incase)

    Hydraulic valve lifter.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • Got a mate who happens to be a mechanic (handy!) coming over this week to do an interim service and we are gonna have a look - all about prolonging the life of the car at this point!

Thanks all, i'll let you know how I get on.
