Stolen and recovered?
Hello, somebody please help shed some light into this.
My car has been stolen and recovered (6 months later). The insurance company returned the car to me when it was recovered (as they never paid me anything following my claim stating it was my fault it was stolen as keys left in car).
When it was recovered and returned to me the insurance continued as before and that was it, nobody informed me otherwise. Fast forward 1 Year today I went to sell my car to my local garage just to see the HPI came back as a stolen/write off. Now you can imagine my surprise as I was never aware of this and nobody informed me, my insurance definitely didn’t communicate anything with me, my NCB was never affected, my premium stayed the same (after the car came back to me), and it was returned in very good condition. What can I do about this, as I still want to sell the car but I don’t know how to explain this to the garage?
Thank you so much

In the morning ring your insurance company, explain the sorry saga and tell them that you need/want the "marker" to be removed so as you can sell the car. You will probably need to speak to somebody above call handler level to achieve this.0

But it is stolen/recovered...0

Your beef is with HPI
Contact them and explain the situation and ask them to sort it out0 -
Sort what out?
The car was stolen.
The insurers closed the file on it while it was still missing.
The car was recovered.
The stolen-recovered car was returned to the owner.
The car's record is merely reflecting that.
(OK, the claim involved zero payout due to the driver's contributory negligence - but that doesn't affect the chain of events)
Coming soon: "I bought a used car, and it turned out to be stolen-recovered, but HPI didn't flag it and are giving me some story about how that's because the insurer didn't pay out since the keys had been left in it. Who's to blame?"0 -
The hpi entry is showing it as a write off not stolen and recovered!
They don't show stolen and recovered!0 -
Yes, the insurers wrote it off while it was missing.
That's why it's been categorised - Cat X is "Stolen/recovered, minimal damage"
https://www.copart.co.uk/search/catxstolenrecoveredminimaldamage/
They just didn't pay out anything after the write-off, because of the terms of the policy and the driver's contributory negligence.
If not for the key situation, you'd be absolutely fuming if they delayed pay-out for six months just in case it was ever recovered...0 -
From the hpi website:The HPI Check will not provide details of vehicles that have been recorded as stolen but have subsequently been recovered without damage0

"without damage".
The OP hasn't mentioned it being undamaged.0 -
"Very good condition" (for a car stolen six months before) is not exactly a synonym for "undamaged", is it?0
