Capital One letter - legit or not?

I got a letter today from Capital One telling me that someone may have attempted to use my personal details to set up a Creditwise account and want me to send an email with a unique reference number to either confirm or deny it was me.
It was franked mail on headed paper and the email address would appear to be a valid Capital One domain but the letter just looks a bit, well, rubbish. I've worked in IT for many years so know all about phishing scams and this looks legit but just wanted to check as I can't find a reference to this kind of letter anywhere. The lack of a contact number on the letter is what is bugging me.

I did just phone but got an Indian Call Centre telling me that there was a note saying Creditwise was down a few days ago so perhaps it was that! I'll try again tomorrow as their fraud team go home at 6 apparently. Probably legit but they need to work on their letters if it is as it looks a bit unprofessional which is exactly what you don't want in a legit fraud warning.0

I've just received one of these letters too - did you manage to find out whether or not it was legitimate?

Hi Becky and welcome to the forum
Why not send CapitalOne a secure message via their online portal? That way you will be able to determine if it is a scam by simply asking them if the correspondence you have received is genuine. I've got a CapitalOne card and have never received that sort of letter...I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Creditwise is part of Capital one, it gives you your credit score I use it alone with C1 account on line account and App.

If your still worried contact C1 via on-line account or phone them

I would be tempted to bin the letter and ignore it. It sounds to me like some sort of way to make you afraid that somebody has stolen your identity and try to sell you some sort of identity protection product.I've just received one of these letters too - did you manage to find out whether or not it was legitimate?

Even if it is legitimate, obviously they have not been successful in order for such a letter to be sent. Ignoring the letter will therefore have the same effect as replying no.0
