New Build House - Open Fibre providers not Sky or Virgin??

Hi All,

I've recently bought a new build house but my developers have said I need to go through Open Fibre Networks (OFNL) in order to get my Television and Broadband packages set up. I've tried Sky and Virgin direct by putting in my postcode etc but it's not registered or they can't provide service to my area?

Has anybody else had to go through Open Fibre Networks or anything similar to what I'm experiencing?

I'm concerned that because they're a third party, they'll probably take a skim on the top of my monthly payments... Apparently I can get Sky but only through these guys.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Unfortunately your house developer has had the properties wired up to use FTTP from OFNL.

Your choice is going to be restricted to the ISPs who use the OFNL system and can be found at https://www.ofnl.co.uk/availableisps . Note this doesn't include any of the main stream ISPs.

If your house deeds allow for fitting a satellite dish then you can get Sky TV through that.
  • For Sky TV get a satellite dish as stated, you don't have to "bundle" the broadband and voice service and can buy TV on its own, like I do. It is unlikely that a new build estate is a conservation area or your property is listed so you should be good to go - for some more detail information the planning portal has plenty:

See also this judgment from the ECHR on the right to erect a satellite dish : https://www.bailii.org/eu/cases/ECHR/2008/1710.html

For broadband, just pick whichever of the providers that are available that suits your needs best.

If your only objective is getting a "deal" on a bundle of all the services together, then you bought the wrong house. Take it back to the shop and buy a second hand one instead.

Could do with a MSE sticky re FTTP .
Essential for those on new builds .
