No travel insurance for holiday in 2021

  • Our trip with Riviera travel was cancelled in March, they have offered us a credit note for part of the cost, (hopefully insurance will cover the rest), they asked us to use it to book with them upto 2021, We are 70, if travel is still restricted then for over 70s and in view of our age, will ABTA/ATOL refund the cost of the trip if it is cancelled again, and would you expect our travel insurance still to refund?

As far as I am aware Sandra if you booked a package holiday with Riviera you are entitled to a full refund and do not have to accept a credit note
    From their website T & C's
    1. A Refund Credit Note is financially protected, just like your original booking. If your original booking, for example a package holiday with flights, came with ATOL financial protection, the RCN will still provide this protection. If your original booking came with ABTA financial protection, for example a cruise holiday or other package holiday including rail travel, the RCN will still provide this protection.
    2.  A Refund Credit Note retains your right to a cash refund, right up until the time it expires. If you’ve not been able to use your RCN to book a new holiday, we’ll automatically issue you a cash refund upon its expiry on 31st March 2021.
I could be wrong but I read point 2 as leaning towards entitling you to a cash refund.  Point 3 even talks about it.  If you want your money back then stick to your guns.
Someone who is more knowledgeable than me hopefully will be along soon.  I am happy to be corrected.

Forget any sort of credit notes, the law has not been tested.  Request a full cash refund.

People who have taken vouchers find that when rebooking the price has risen considerably. Flights, hotels etc for the future are all an unknown at the moment. Also you don't know what will happen to the world by then. Countries are starting to close borders. Others will follow. A second wave is predicted, may, maynot happen but if it does this will take us into next year.
It is my understanding that so far, vouchers are not covered by refunds from any source. You are entitled to a refund. Go for it.
Another aspect to take into consideration is that travel insurance isn't covering for Covid. Add this to the mix and I wouldn't book any travel until it's all sorted itself out.
Your question about ABTA?ATOL is that they cover for complete collapse of a company so only in this event would they reimburse and that will be a long haul of applications and the company debt.
Refunds may take some time. The package holiday needs to get refunds from the flights and hotels before it can reimburse you. They too are dragging their heels for obvious reasons. Their companies are in crisis and the unknown.
Again, appy for the refund and wait.
