BT- mandatory 12 month contract

Hi.
We just moved into a new property and wanted to port across our TalkTalk service from our old flat. We need to have a BT line to do this, but once TT is up and running we want to pay our line rental to them and not BT.
BT said that the property has a BT line but the previous owners 'stopped' the service so they need to reactivate it. No engineer or anything is coming, as far as I can tell someone just flicks a switch at the exchange.
Catch is to do this they want us to sign up for a 12 month contract at £11 a month!! This is just a total waste of money as we are paying for TT anyway. Can they do this - I would have thought it was an abuse of monopoly seeing as we have no alternative??
Apologies if this has been asked before but I searched the forum and just got loads of blank threads.
thanks

Talk Talk have lied to you.
You do not need to have a BT line to get Talk Talk. Talk Talk, like all the other line providers now in the market, could instruct Openreach to undertake whatever work is necessary (just like BT has to do). Talk Talk won't do so because it would mean them paying Openreach.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
ahh.. really! My OH works for carphonewarehouse so you would have thought he would have mentioned this to me!!!
so what do i do.. just phone up talk talk and tell them to sort it out through openreach?0 -
Just ask TT and see, if your OH works for them maybe you can get a staff discount deal.0

yeah we get broadband thrown in for free with the line rental as an employee discount - that's why paying BT for line rental is such a waste of money! I'll give talktalk a call and see. thanks for the info.0

You could always agree to pay TT the cost of the install or they could meet you half way.0

am having the same problem myself, I asked about cancelling the bt line rental to go with TT and was told that to cancel it you have to pay the outstanding cost of line rental UPTO a maximum of 70 quid. try taking that to talk talk and seeing if you can get any freebies to cover some of the cost. You're my wife now!!0

If you tried to do the same thing in reverse Talk Talk would also raise a charge of up to £70.00p !!!0
