Coil Pack on Corsa

Hi,
I bought my daughter a Corsa (2012) from a dealership 2 months ago. Within 6 weeks we had to get the brakes done (shoes, discs and pads).
Because of this I took it to a mechanic for a diagnostic to check the rest of the car. We have been told the Coil Pack has gone, its falling apart. He advised us to take the car back.
After contacting the dealership they have stated "this has just suddenly failed" and "would need replacing over the lifespan of the car" - the car has 38000 on the clock. He suggested taking back for a repair to be done, but I no longer trust them. Plus they are 30 miles away and I'm concerned about driving it all that way to get it fixed. Surely we shouldn't be experiencing problems with the car after only 2 months.

Is it normal for the coil pack to go after only 2 months?
Should the dealership take the car back?

It's not after 2months, it's after 7 years.
What's falling apart about the coil packs?
Should you be trusting this mechanic? If the coil packs were failing you would know about it much before you got it to a mechanic.

Coilpacks are almost like consumables on modern cars and tend to fail frequently. For your mechanic to say its falling apart and to take it back just because of this suggests to me that he is not a very good one. Get the dealer to pay for the repair or repair it.

Unfortunately it's not the dealer's fault that you are 30 miles away. I suggest negotiating with the dealer.

It was taken to the mechanic as it didn't feel right to drive and a light flashing intermittently on dash. If this was a car bought from dodgy dave on the street corner for £1k then I would have expected problems. The mechanic advised to take back knowing its gonna cost about £250 to put right. As the car is from a dealer I wouldn't expect to be throwing money at it so early in the day

Mechanic definitely sounds dodgy, a coil pack for the Corsa looks to be about £50-£60.

Once again, why are you trusting this mechanic? He sounds like dodgy Dave, if he wants to charge £250 for coil packs that may not even need replacing just yet.

Shock horror...someone buys an 7 yr old car and is complaining about spending on consumables.

Next time buy brand new.

Sorry but that is hogwash. Coil packs don't fall to bits, if they do fail it is internal electronics that fail. If it were falling apart then the vehicle wouldn't run if it was one coil pack that serves all cylinders or would sound like a bag of spanners due to the misfire on the cylinder with the failed coil pack if it had them on individual ones. If it is running and it sounds like its running smoothly then there's nothing wrong with the coil pack.

As others have said £250 is a joke. Its £50-£60 for the part and 30 minutes to an hour labour so I'd want change out of £100-£125.

Anyone with a Corsa should always have a spare coil pack with them, at least you are then prepared for when the inevitable happens.

Do you know when it was last serviced? if it was over 4 months i would consider getting a full service which should show up any more problems.

The coil packs do fall apart on these cars, heat from the engine makes the plastic go brittle and they crumble, I used to work for Vauxhall, as already said it’s a 7 year old mass produced car, I suspect the chain kit will need replaced before long too if not already been done.
