I think I have now solved this problem.

I dismantled the mouse and found some hairs had got in around the wheel and left button after cleaning all seems ok.

    Thank you everyone

Aah! Somehow the cross hairs have reconfigured themselves and now identify as right clicks. Problem solved. :-)

I didn't realise anybody still used mice with balls and certainly can't figure out just how a buildup of gunk could case problems with the buttons causing them to reverse.

A mouse which uses LED or LASER rather than a ball to track movement? You know, the design of mouse which has been around for 10+ years at least.

Optical mice (with the laser) are the common type, ball mice are a bit old hat now.

Ball mice work only on one surface typically one provided by a mouse mat but optical mice will work on any surface (providing it isn't reflective). The presence of dust build-up on the mouse rollers of a ball mouse is eliminated on an optical mouse and it would take a large collection of dust bunnies to disrupt an optical mouse.

TL;DR - when your ball mouse needs replacing get an optical one.
