Abbey card - but no cashback as Abbey/MBNA

Options
I was delighted to see in the tips about "Abbey Cashback: 5% but only on supermarket shopping. All Abbey credit card holders, meaning both new customers and those who already have one, will get 5% cashback up to a maximum of £50"

I dusted off my old Abbey Mastercard and started using it for supermarket shopping. Two statements down the line, and no cashback yet.

I phoned the number on my bill today. It seems my card, although called Abbey, is really an MBNA card and not a "proper" Abbey Card, so no cashback for me.

I think this is really misleading and unfair - all the promo stuff about this has referred to "all" Abbey cards. has anyone else fallen into this trap?

Give them a ring again, stay polite, point out that it says ALL Abbey cards, ask to speak to someone higher up, ask what you need to do to convert to a 'proper' Abbey card as opposed to whatever they consider you have at the moment that has 'Abbey' on it. Make a bit of a fuss. You'll be no worse off.
  • Don't forget that they have been taken over by Santander (so are now "The Spanish Aquisition").
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Thanks. Been there, done that.

Abbey/MBNA say it's nothing to do with them if Abbey/Santander have a promotion.. They say if I want to take part I should contact Abbey/Santander and apply for a new card..

I'm currently contacting Abbey/Santander and complaining about the misleading publicity, but since I apparently don't have any commercial relationship with that part of Abbey, I doubt if I'll get anything other than an apology...

I thought Abbey had written to all holders of the MBNA Abbey card offering the new card. You would then have been pre-approved for the new card.

What I find odd is that (at least up to a month ago when I last tried), if you go into an Abbey branch and use their customer phones to discuss your credit card, you automatically get through to the MBNA people - and have to ask to be put through to the Santender people.

You wont. Its an offer for new Abbey Santander card holders only - the new cards were only launched in July.

Yes, but my point is that it doesn't actually say that anywhere. Even on this site:

"Abbey Cashback: 5% but only on supermarket shopping. All Abbey credit card holders, meaning both new customers and those who already have one, will get 5% cashback up to a maximum of £50 on all spending in supermarkets before 31 Jan 2008. "

I'm an Abbey credit card holder....

I also have an Abbey credit card that I've had for years, but not used for at least the last four until I read about the supermarket cashback offer on this Martins' website. Just like you, I've been told twice on the telephone that this offer is nothing to do with Abbey/MBNA and that I would need to open a new account with Abbey Santander. I'm disgusted and will be closing my credit card with Abbey in light of this.
  • Thanks, Thoughtful. I wonder how many more of us there are...

thoughtful, if you want to close your Abbey/Mbna card, Abbey cannot close the account, I was told that it was a Mbna card and only Mbna can close the account.
I had my two Abbey/Mbna cards replaced in august and they are still showing the Abbey logo, I don't really understand why as now Abbey seems to wash their hands off the old cards.
