I have just bought a laptop acer aspire 5310 already have a desk top.I want to be able to use the laptop wireleslly so i guess need to bur router (which one) desktop connects to surfboard motorola supplied by virgin so do i remove all three wires from modem replace into router (desktop sorted?) then add laptop or is there another way needs to be simple not very techie

You will need to buy a DSL/cable modem e.g. here and this connects to your Motorola surfboard modem via Ethernet cable.

you will need a DSL router, doesn't matter which brand as long as it covers all modern wireless signals. your surfboard modem will plug into the router via the cable which is used at the moment to give your desktop its connection, your computer will then plug into the router in the same fasion as it was plugged into the modem. your laptop will then be able to access the wireless signal given from the router.

will all the cables come with the routerand until i have a router will it be ok to unplug the usb from the modem one connecting desktop and plug in laptop

Normally one short Ethernet cable is supplied with a router. You should be able to swap your PC and laptop until you buy a suitable router to share the connection.
