Power Socket on laptop

Hoping someone can help me here! About a month ago the power socket on my two year old laptop broke, basically it wouldn't charge up unless I held the wire in a certain position. My warranty had run out, so I took it to a computer repair shop who charged me £120 to get it fixed (laptop is only worth £500!).

And a month later it's happening again! I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience, should I take it to be repaired again or just buy a new laptop? I'm in my final year at university and really need a reliable computer, but not sure where I'm going to find the money!

Thanks,
Goldengum

The "repair" that cost you £120 should last longer than one month! Take it back and get them to do a proper job.

    £120 and no warranty?
I would expect that they would guarantee their work for three to six months.
What do they say on this matter?
  • How did it break the 2nd time? By you tripping over the cable or something? The repair centre won't honour any guarantee if it was damaged again by the user.....
  • I've just looked at the receipt and it says repairs are guaranteed for 6 months, but I really don't want this to happen every month! They seemed like nice enough people, but when i got it back last time the keyboard wouldn't work so I ended up going back again (30mins walk with heavy laptop!), but at end of the day I can't afford to pay someone else £100 to fix it instead, so fingers crossed it will last longer this time.

No, I've been so careful, haven't even moved the laptop from my desk!

Well they did not repair it they bodged it. Take it back to them and see what they say but it should have been repaired good as new.

  • Funny isn't it.....we all run to buy the latest wireless internet, bluetooth, wap whatever, yet we still have to have the power plugged in for prolonged use, I've just looked, and my kids have a big orange garden extension draped accross the room with the lap top plugged in, and they still trip over it and ruin the connector, roll on nuclear powered laptops.

Is it a dell by any chance ? I have done the same repair on 3 of my friends lappy's . £120 seem a bit steep for the repair, no wonder they were nice to you!

Now I know not everyone can fix stuff, and I'm all for people providing a service but £120 for a connector! Even if it took 2 hours to fix that's a serious amount of cash for a straight forward fix.

Anyway, here's a blow by blow account of how to go about it.

For what it's worth, I'd be at their door asking them to do it right this time!
