Just moved in - debt on gas metre

    They should send you a new card in your name which when inserted into the meter will clear the debt.

    They can only give what they call a tag or rti code for an electric key rather than gas card meter.

    When I was in this situation in the past I rang the provider and told them that I'd just taken over the property. I was then able to pick up a card for a new account at my local shop which could then be topped up with credit without paying anything towards the previous debt.

    When ringing, always make a note of
    * name of rep you speak to
    * date and time
    * what you are told


    Then if this esclates/does not get resolved, you can refer back later.


    You should not be paying off someone else's debt (unless it it a temporary measure and you will get credited later).


    I'd be inclined to put things in writing - do you have an email for SSE?
