Paying for eBay car purchase

Have bought a £6k car on eBay. Seller wants a deposit via PayPal & the rest via BACS before I collect.
I haven’t been to see the car in person yet (lots of pictures & lengthy convos about quality) as it’s 200 miles away.
I’m worried about making the BACS payment as there will be no comeback right?

    Don’t do it!!
Maybe pay a small deposit such as £100/200 but deffo no bacs transfer before you visit. Tell them you can either take cash on the day or take your card reader etc with you to do a bank transfer then and there. If they’re genuine then they’ll understand! If they’re dodgy then they’ll moan and you walk away

£6k comes under Fastpay, you don't have to do a BACS. Turn up, make sure the car is as described and legit, do a bank transfer on the spot. It should show instantly or within an hour or two at the most.

This sounds a little worrying, did you do all of the usual checks before agreeing to purchase the car and is a standard auction or BIN or a classified ad. Have you checked the car out as far as you can online?

No, no, no. Full payment before you've even seen the car, via a mechanism that gives you no protection? Sounds a lot like a scam.

It would be easy for you to get the deposit back via PayPal, which makes it even more suspicious - nobody with any sense will accept PayPal for a collection item.

    Not that easy.
There is no buyer protection on motor vehicles and there is no protection for deposits in any category.

Depending on how the paypal payment was funded, a chargeback might be an option but this could lead to the OP's Paypal account being closed as paypal don't like losing money and they do sometimes cancel accounts as a result of this.
