Refund by mistake - should I cash in?
Options
Apologies upfront if I have posted in the wrong forum, it's Energy company related so I thought I would try here first.
TL;DR - I think npower sent me a cheque that I think is incorrect and they said I should cash it anyway. It feels wrong to me, but should I do it?
I had some credit on a pre-paid meter (new home move) and had it replaced with a standard one. npower refunded me the credit in a cheque last February - which was about £40. Fast forward to today and my account is going through an reassessment, due to complete tomorrow. At the moment my online account/bill looks totally wrong and I am waiting for this to complete, but that's not my question.
Something in their system has triggered old messages to be sent again and I received both a "Previous Occupier, pay your due balance on the meter" and another refund cheque for the exact same amount as they have refunded me for previously. I phone npower up and tried to explain this - the helpful chap called their cheque department and told me the cheque was valid, I was entitled to the money and I should cash it. This feels wrong to me, so should I?
(SIde note - they also told me to ignore the letter to the "Occupier" and that I was not in danger of having my power supply cut.)

So did you cash the one from February 2018?0

Yes, cash the cheque. You have done the correct thing and queried it. npower are telling you to cash it.
No need to spend it straight away if you're worried about the account reassessment.
I once got 2 lots of cash incentives from an energy supplier and queried the second lot. Was told it was mine to enjoy as they didn't have a repayment system in place anyway for gift card incentives.0 -

Sorry, I should of said that I did indeed cash the cheque. That's why I'm a bit uneasy about cashing a second cheque.0 -
