Back door size

I need to replace my back door as it's in a poor state and drafty. The door is wooden and the frame and reveal are steel.

The opening itself is 755mm wide. By the time a new UPVC frame is put in the clear width will be reduced to no more than 655mm, which seems too little. Is this right?

  • Most common door sizes are;

    1981mm (6ft 6in) x 762mm (2ft 6in)
    1981mm (6ft 6in) x 838mm (2ft 9in)
    2032mm (6ft 8in) x 813mm (2ft 8in)
    2057mm (6ft 9in) x 838mm (2ft 9in)
    2083mm (6ft 10in) x 863mm (2ft 10in)
    2134mm (7ft) x 914mm (3ft)

So your 655mm door is very tight.

Yeah that's what I thought, getting on for impractically narrow?

Maybe I'll have to cut the existing frame and reveal out to enlarge the opening.

It is very unusual to have a steel framed door in the UK. They are common on the Continent but not here. Is the house a system-built house made just after the War? If it is not, and is an old house without cavity walls, it might not cost a lot to get the door opening widened.

Yes it's a system built house of the late 1940s. The reveal/cavity closer, jamb and a decorative frame around the outside are pressed, galvanized steel, so there isn't a door frame in the traditional sense.

My plan was to use an angle grinder to cut the reveal from the jamb, construct a new larger reveal from wood and fit a new door frame up against the steel jamb, the inner dimensions of the new frame matching the existing jamb.

My idea was to cut out and remove the reveal inwards from where I'm pointing:-

Replace it with a slightly larger frame of 18 x 140mm smooth planed timber, like I did for one of our windows (replacing a similar original, rather than stripping, sanding, filling etc the original):-

Then fit the new frame and door inside.

  • Looking at your pictures I'd be tempted to take both the door and window out and replace with a new door and side panel or French doors.

I don't know what you mean, it's a fairly normal size back door in the kitchen and the window is in an upstairs bedroom.
