Lounge suite refurbishment gone wrong

We recently engaged a reputable company to reupholster our three piece suite, replacing cushions and recovering.

They took it away for three weeks then returned it this week. They have used the wrong material to cover it (the firm admits this mistake) and the standard of workmanship is shoddy. The cushions are different sizes and don't all fit properly. One chair-arm cover doesn't fit at all and there are several pleats in the "skirt" that don't lie flat.

The company offered two options. The first was a reduction of a thousand pounds, which is definitely not acceptable. The incorrect fabric used is the wrong colour for our lounge and it looks like a botched job. The other option is for them to take it away and do it again in the correct fabric (and hopefully fixing the errors in cushions etc.). This means we have to do without sofas and chairs for another three weeks and we have very little confidence they will do a decent job second time around.

Basically, we feel they have ruined a reasonably servicable suite. Our first instinct was to ask for our deposit back, say they can have the suite if they want it, and go out and buy a new one. The company aren't prepared to do this.

What are our rights with regard to a refurbishing job that fails to come up to standard? If we allow them to take it back and have another go at getting it right, are we entitled to any compensation for the inconvenience and if so, who determines the amount? If they try a second time and we are still not happy with the quality of finish, what are our rights then?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

If they offered a £1,000 reduction, how much was the original cost?
