How does electoral registration information get from councils to CRA's

Does anyone know the technical details of how the electoral registration information gets added to your credit files?

TransUnion has my registration down as ending in December 2018 with no current registration which I can't explain as the annual household enquiry was completed in August. Experian and Equifax are both correct, though Experian show it as ending and starting in December and the previous entry had the street name repeated twice.

Basically the council and TransUnion are each saying it's the other's responsibility so I was wondering how the data is usually transferred so I can make a suggestion on how they can get it refreshed. Do the CRA's pull the data from the council or do the councils push the data to the CRA's? It's Cheshire West and Chester Council if that makes any difference.

The council send through update and the CRA upload it.

Some only send it through once a year.

Thanks. I guess I need to badger the council then as they were making out that TransUnion would have pulled the data from them but that doesn't sound like the case. I'll get onto them again.

Apologies for the hi-jack but my credit rating fell drastically when I moved house last December due to my status on the electoral roll not being updated (informed council first week after moving in).

Credit rating has continued to be low since then, I contacted the council last month and they confirmed my registration and told me that they had only updated the record in February.

I am looking around for car insurance and premiums are coming in at double what I an paying at present on the comparison sites ( I understand the Electoral roll status can affect insurance quotes).

I have just checked with Transunion and there is no Electoral Roll registration against my name - despite the fact that I have already received a polling card for next month's elections.

I have now emailed a copy of the polling card to Transunion as evidence of my registration, does anyone know if this will be accepted as sufficient to confirm my registration and how long it will take for the changes to apply?

    Thanks

How long would it take to photo shop your name onto someone elses polling card?

How do you think they could verify you hadn't done that?

You don't have a credit rating, so fear not.

Ask your local authority to update the CRA's if you are indeed on the ER.

Car insurance will vary from area to area depending on the crime rate etc. of where you have moved to.
I doubt this has anything to do with your ER status.

    Credit Checks
We, our insurers, or credit providers carry out checks, now, at renewal and in certain circumstances where policy
amendments are requested, with credit reference agencies, against both public data (such as information from the
electoral roll) and private data sources (such as your credit history) to verify your identity, assess your application
for an insurance quotation or credit and offer you the best terms.

The assumption is that people who aren't on the electoral roll are into something dodgy.
  • It might take CRA 2/3 month to get the record updated and this is also possible that they miss the information.

If you have passed 2/3 month time since you have been registered on electoral roll then i suggest to get a letter from council that you are registered at XX address and send it to CRA for manual update.

They definitely won’t accept a poll card. Mine’s just been fixed. What I had to do was raise a dispute on Noddle so I had a dispute reference number then I had to email the council to ask for a letter headed pdf stating my name, address, the exact date I was registered, the fact that I’m still registered and my voter registration number. Then I emailed it to TransUnion with the dispute number in the subject. They hadn’t responded within 28 days so I then put the word “complaint” in the subject and that finally got them to act.

Of course they’ve put the wrong date in because they’re totally incompetent but it’s a month early so I’ll just leave it. There’s also a note against it saying that I disputed their information even though it was clearly their error in the first place.

Hope you can get yours sorted too. It does update within 7 days once they’ve done it anyway.

    Thanks,

I found out from Transunion that as predicted they won't accept a Poll card so I contacted the council again.

The first person I spoke to insisted that the record had been updated on 1st February, when I asked how this information is distributed to the CRA's she said that it is done individually to each agency ( I am finding it a bit difficult to believe that not one of the agencies received the info and suspect it was never sent). She also said that the council had sent me a letter confirming my registration but I have never received that either.

After speaking to transunion I called the council back and spoke to the 'Senior Electoral Services Officer' who emailed me a copy of the letter to forward on which I have done. The letter she sent me is dated 23 April not 1st February ( Hmmm?)

Confusingly when I sent the letter to Experian I got an email back saying that I am already recorded as being on the register even though my 'free' experian credit check via Barclaycard states that I am not registered so who knows?

The best thing to do is probably to request a statutory credit report from each of the CRA’s then you know you’re looking at the original data not data that’s been formatted by a 3rd party. The Experian one is a pain to get as you have to wait for them to post a PIN to you but at least if you saw it was missing from there you’d know that no lender would be able to see it. You can get the Equifax and TransUnion ones instantly online which is much easier.
