Would that matter? If the current neighbours continued to let him have the use in the spirit of good neighbourliness it would still fail on the adverse possession unless you could somehow prove they were unaware and weren't just simply consenting out of kindness to an elderly person.
And am I old-fashioned for thinking that "No good deed should go unpunished" should never be any family's motto?

Really what the OP can now consider is:
Under cover of darkness - instead of moving the post a foot back into their property, move everything else a foot further into the neighbouring property giving the illusion that they have done what was asked... leaving a new gatepost hole a foot further in for detail.
They then hope this goes unnoticed for about 12 years and claim adverse possession because this time it was without permission0 -
