Amex welcome offers not available if you have held any Amex card within last 24 months

I was just looking at the T&C's for Amex cards as I've been thinking about applying for the Gold Rewards card. I currently hold the Platinum Cashback card and have been very satisfied with it. I noticed the following text in the terms of the 20,000 points welcome offer: All introductory offers are subject to change, can be withdrawn at any time and are not available if you currently hold or have held any personal American Express Card in the past 24 months. This seems to be the case for all of Amex's other cards with welcome offers. Until recently, the welcome offer was available if you had not held a card within the previous 6 months. It's now been upped to 2 years. This makes it much less lucrative unless you have never held any Amex card before. I have no idea what has prompted Amex to change the terms. For me the welcome offer and referral bonuses are a huge part of what makes Amex cards worthwhile. What are people's thoughts on this change?

Abuse of the system, can't say I blame them.

They’re well within their rights to do it - too many people took the p1$$.

Likewise banks increased monthly pay-in requirements and the number of active DD’s in order to maintain switch bonus eligibility

MSE recently flagged up Nat West switch bonus offer - no mention of active DDs required that I could see, and only one initial substantial amount pay in for the Select current account deal.

Possibly the only one without such monthly credit and DD conditions ?
