How much top soil to cover an area?

I want to put some top-soil on the lawn in order to re-seed it. Not being very good at maths.....what would the calculation be? I haven't measured it out yet. I think I would like to put at least 5cms or so over the area concerned. Would it be Area x 5cm cubed?

Yes, basically. If you work out the area in square metres, multiply that by 0.05 (because 5cm is 0.05m) to find how many cubic metres you need. A cubic metre is about 1.8 tonnes, if you're buying it by mass instead of volume.

    As an example, if you need to cover 40 square metres you need 40 × 0.05 = 2 cubic metres, or 2 × 1.8 = 3.6 tonnes.
