If you're on economy 7 your hot water should be dictated by the cheap rate period...not be on all time ?0 -
Hi Robin, yes of course...
So the bill states the following:
Your current balance to be paid is £600.00.
Your electricity charges are for the period 7th January 2019 - 20 March 2019 and are based on actual meter reads.
Your personal projection (expected annual cost) is £690.00. We only have one tariff, everyone pays our best price.
Your estimated ANNUAL consumption is 3100 kWh.
Move in meter reading: 1315 Actual
Current: 4288 Actual
Units used: 2973
How we calculated your bill...
Consumption: 2973 units (kWh) - Price Per Unit (17.97p) - Amount £534.25
Standing charge - 73 days - Price Per Unit (26.91p) - Amount £19.64
Sub Total - £553.89
VAT - £46.11
Thanks so much ... :T0 -
Exactly - this is what I am trying to dispute with my landlord. As I have figured out with the manufacturer, whoever has installed it has programmed it to be on ALL the time... we shouldn't be opening or touching the cylinder as there are live wires as soon as you open the panel (which the landlord has told us to do in their booklet as it is 'not their issue'...
As informed by the manufacturers who are currently taking legal action against the landlords for providing such information in their booklet, we should never have been told to open it and try to programme the programmer as there is NO programmer inside the cylinder, they don't even manufacture cylinders with programmers, only thermostats.0 -
Also if your on economy 7 your cylinder will have 2 immersion heaters, bottom one controlled by cheap rate period...top one is used for a boost if necessary , and could be controlled possibly by just a switch, not necessarily a programmer
It's not on all the time is it ? although once the cylinder is up to temp your not consuming electricity anyway0 -
Thank you for your reading detail. Thats not E7 but a single rate tariff
- is your heating underfloor/panel or storage heaters or a big hot water tank and a water radiator system ?
Rubbish predictions from Ecotricity aren't they - £690 and 3100kwh when in 2 1/2 months you use that.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
The cylinder is an OSO HOT WATER SUPER EXPRESS SX120 - I honestly don't even know what that means or is - they have pictures on it on their website but unfortunately I am still trying to get to grips with it...
There is literally no switches at all anywhere near or on the boiler, the only switch present in the room where the cylinder is, is an ON and OFF switch on the wall... we have had it switched off since 5pm yesterday and I have not turned it back on as we are trying to establish with consumption spreadsheets with the elec. company as to whether if turned off... this could be the culprit, but surely whoever installed it is missing something and it should not be installed to produce £300 worth of elec. a month? However, more than 24 hours later with it still turned off... I am still getting boiling hot water...
To have used nearly twice the annual consumption of electricity in two months we are beginning to believe it is on ALL the time.
I wish I could attach photos to show you the cylinder! :eek:0 -
Hi again Robin, really appreciate your help.
We have three space heaters in the house, two upstairs that have never been turned on and one in the living room, that gets turned on ONCE a day for an hour or two, some days we never use it. We then turn it off and use blankets and hot water bottles if we are cold...
We do not have it on a timer as we are out most of the time.
I have just sent the following as a reply to another member but will paste it here again...

The first thing you are going to have to get fixed is sorting out which is your meter using a "burns test ". Get access to the meter room, get a copy of the key also. One puts the kettle on , the other is in the meter room watching the meter you suspect is yours. There is a little red light on the meter which pulse rapidly when the kettle is on, then slow down when its off.Do a couple of these tests, via mobile to establish your meter..
Label the meter with your flat number , and check the serial number matches.
Once you have sorted this out, then understand the eco 7 meter and work out which is night and day from the two or three readings on a digital meter ( plus a total of the two which is never needed in Eco 7 )0 -
I agree with Houbara - do a test and prove that the meter you believe is yours really is.
The hot water tank appears to be fairly standard - they have two immersion heaters on them ; the bottom one is usually on at night associated with E7 (but you don't have E7 from the readings you've given us) and a top one which is a boost. There will be a little thermostat attached to the tank with a dial you adjust with your fingers or screwdriver. Even if the bottom one is permanently on the thermostat however high will control the temp. These modern tanks are so super insulated that once up to temp the heat loss is very low and the tank almost appears cold.
I think there may be something more going on with your heating than you know about. Have you an underfloor heating scheme - are there any wall mounted thermostats ?
You really need several meter readings at different times of the day - as you have a smart meter do you also have an IHD (in house display) in your kitchen. Some of these also give meter readingsNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

Had a quick read of your posts and it looks like you have been given the installation manual for the tank. Only for professional use.
Also a lot of emersions only have a 13a fused switch with usually red indicator light on wall to turn on an off, so no timer? Some times in kitchen for ease of use.
