domain+email question

A mate wants a domain (easy) and email to go with it. Too many options for email. Fasthosts do 50GB Exchange mailbox. Stupid question time - can you access an "Exchange mailbox" via IMAP or do you have to use the "Exchange" protocol?
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Just order a domain with email forwarding (to gmail/hotmail)
Don't need exchange, which will cost more.0 -

Too much choice (domains). Current plan - buy domain through Google Domains. Try with Gmail (free) and if too complicated for mate set up email in GSuite (it's a small business, $6/month for 1 user and, I assume, as many aliases as he wants for free). If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0

I've used 123reg or heartinternet in the past for email forwarding service with a domain.
You might be better off getting a domain and email service from someone like portfast.0 -
Fasthosts offer a basic email hosting solution https://www.fasthosts.co.uk/email-hosting/standard-email
If your looking for cheap basic email hosting, I can recommend Polarismail, they do a $12/£8-£9 basic package that includes one mailbox, 25 gb storage and POP/IMAP/SMTP access as well as stacks of other stuff.

While others disagree, I never use mail forwarding from your domain host, too much can go wrong, IMHO keep them separate. If you were to use email forwarding, POBOX have a range of email forwarding plans. https://www.pobox.com/0 -

Not scary at all I switched the MX of 3 domains just yesterday, usually it gets completed in a few hours, but can be longer depending on a number of factors. As long as you follow the instructions word by word, you'll be fine.:)0
