Does anyone know if you need to have a smart meter installed if you switch to Shell Energy (Tariff Fixed until 31 May 2020). I emailed their customer service and had an automatic reply saying that as I wasn't an account holder, they couldn't answer due to data protection issues (!).
Thanks
Thanks

Think the answer would be yes as their tariffs are based on you having smart meters.0

Curious Moose, I started a switch to them yesterday (Fixed Jul 2020) and checked during the application process that there was no mention of it only being available if a smart meter was installed. I downloaded the tariff's terms and conditions, carefully checked them before I hit the button and there's no mention in those either. I'll give them a bell tomorrow and check because I don't want one and will cancel because I'm in the 14-day cooling off period.
Ironically, the first two suppliers I looked at mentioned quite clearly their plans included smart meter installation. Shell Energy caught my eye because their's didn't. I grabbed a screen print 'just in case'.

All these smart meter only tariffs will show it clearly in the terms and conditions. If it does` nt then they are not allowed to foist a smart meter upon occupiers who do not want one, so ignore them.
Shell used to be called First Utility, (.F U for short ) so maybe they are getting up to their tricks again which made them a supplier to be wary of.
Shell Energy do have a smart meter tariff. Fixed September 2020 plus Smart, but its not the one you have signed up for0 -
been with first utility now shell for quite a while, looking at tariffs for when my fix ends.....no mention of smart meters at all.0

Thanks Houbara and luvchocolate. Not usually paranoid about this kind of thing (possibly it's my age!) but the last time my very old boiler was serviced the engineer said it may not be able to deal with the push through (?) of water after a smart meter was installed.
For Curious Moose, just called Shell Energy and they confirmed my tariff does not have the compulsory installation but some do. As Houbara says, they need to put it into their T&C's. If it's any help, the link to those didn't appear until almost half-way though the sign-up process but with time to stop the application. Maybe try it?
