On the back of my Home Hub there is a red socket called WAN what would I connect to that also what would I connect to the USB socket?

If your internet works as it is with nothing connected to the WAN port then you don't need to plug anything else into it.
The USB port you can connect various things like pen sticks, external drives, possibly a mobile internet dongle and share them across all your devices.0 -

Red socket: Standalone BT Fibre Modem for example which early users of FTTC broadband used to have to use before BT/Sky etc released new routers with suitable modems built in. In other words something that connects to the internet connection instead of your router. You then connect to that device with the router allowing the router to do the routie things and leave the actual connecting to the rest of the world to the external device.
