Coldseal Windows Query

Hi Guys,
About 7 years ago, I had doors and windows fitted by Coldseal. I got a 10 year warranty for them at the time.
Recently, a few panes of glass have started to mist, and yesterday the door opening mechanism broke, so I can't get in my front door! So, I thought now would be a good time to use my warranty.
I was just looking for them on google and it appears that they went into liquidation in 2004
Therefore I have a couple of questions:
1) Anyone know if any other company has taken over their customer base, that I could contact to get it fixed?
2) If not, does anyone know whether I have any rights via any other route? Contacting them? Insurance? etc?
3) Anyone else had any luck in getting theirs repaired?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on this.

Hi you both. Firstly the locking mechanism wont be included in the guarantee so you will have to call out a locksmith company. front door type lock 5 or 7 multi point lock approx £160 fitted.
The insurance guarantee, you should have received a copy of the certificate, this will give you the details of the underwriting company, if you dont have one I think your pretty much up the creak without a paddle. I seem to recall window companies are FENSA registered so they might know who the insurers for coldseal were.0 -
I had the same thing with "our Price Windows" (Cheam, surrey area)
guess what -their still trading as "OPW"-yes its legal, ive checked with TS.
If you didnt take out the optional insurance now offered (!0% extra on the price) youve not got any chance.0 -
Definatley check your papers that you recieved with your windows & doors, if you have mis -placed them, i dont think you would have a leg to stand on, unless you payed by finance or credit card (This would prove your purchase).
Safestyle did have consumer insurance guarentees for sure, we have done several insurance jobs for safestyle customers in the last few months.
Ive no idea how to find out who their insurers were, IPWFI is a large provider maybe you could try them....or try calling trading standards they should know.
Sorry I cant be of more help

We had clownseal to put up our conservatory twice. Yes the first one was condemed even before we had put flooring into it. We spend a xmas day soaking up floods that had got in throught the doors, they had no drainage holes and now we are steaming up. We took photos of the daily performance and we could make a sitcom out of it it was so comical. The best thing was when the workmen and the manage spoke to us on the house phone but didnt know how to turn off the answer machine so it recorded the whole conversation. Good bargaining tool to get a good italian tiled floor. Its now wonder they went bust but we would like to thank them for the entertainment factor while it lasted. Good look to you.0

Thanks everyone for the responses, its been very helpful.
I'm still looking for the documentation as to whether it was underwritten elsewhere, and will also try to see how I paid for it.
For the moment, I've changed the lock on the front door that was broken for the one on the back door which was fine. This means I can't get in or out of the back door but at least I can get in the front again! I've also found places that sell replacement locks too!
I'll let you know if I have any luck on the problematic windows!0 -
just to remind all:
tell everyone you know that warranties are useless, and not worth the paper they are written on.
unless backed up by a real pukka insurance company.Get some gorm.0 -
Many thanks for the info folks.
I paid on finance so can prove purchase, also paid an additional sum for the Gold insurance which was I know now a waste of maoney but it was underwritten by GE Finance, so happy days, I'm sure they will be very co-operative and point me in the right direction!?!0 -
Hi,
just a quick update for you. I contacted trading standards who said that a claim can not be made against a company that no longer exsisits. The only saving grace was that if the extra insurance I took was underwritten by a reputable company I could try and claim against them.
Now going through my paperwork with a very fine tooth comb. x0 -
Our windows have started leaking and now have ruined wedding and family photo's - great !!
The previous occupants had all the bits and bibs with the gold service thing also , name on paperwork seems to be first national. Have tried number on paperwork which no longer exsists and no trace of anything helpfull on google.
Any pointers.0
