2008 Renault Modus 1.6 automatic jumps out of 4th gear

Posting on behalf of a neighbour, who has a 2008 Renault Modus 1.6 automatic, which jumps out of 4th gear, goes into 3rd, and puts a warning message up. Engine off/on and it's OK again for a while.
I don't know Renaults at all, however from some research this could potentially be caused by a faulty solenoid in the 'box.

Has anyone seen this issue before, and able to give any info on the likely cause and potential cost to fix?

It could be the solenoid or the Valve body it could be lack of fluid change ATF need changing, with AT filter. The causes of Solenoid fault is weak ATF through lack of changes of the ATF. do yearly changes of ATF to stop solenoids failing.

Id go with the ATF and filter. Nobody ever changes them.

It is a Renault! it could be an unrelated electrical fault. Apparently if a rear lamp is faulty the gearbox will go into limp mode, check the side & tail bulbs at the rear. (Faulty tail lamps make the instrument lamps dim when the brakes are on IIRC)



Otherwise as suggested try a fluid change, BUT Renault use some secret special fully synthetic fluid NOT Dexron III, the wrong fluid will cause its own problems.
