Refund to a closed credit card

Hi,

I made a payment for a council service online about 8-9 months ago. The council is now refunding that payment as I applied for the wrong service. I don't remember what card I used, their email receipt doesn't show any card details and the council said they can't provide that either.

I cleared off and closed quite a few credit cards in the past few months in preparation for a mortgage so it is possible that they might be refunding it to a closed cc.

Does anyone know what happens to a merchant refund to a closed credit card? The council insists that the refund will fail in that case and that they will then contact me to make alternate arrangements.

Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know, I'm only guessing, but I don't think a credit card is ever actually 'closed' in the normal sense of the word. So a refund would still actually go through to the card. I would imagine you would then get a statement showing the account in credit, from which you could have the money sent back to your current account. No doubt somebody will be along to correct me if I'm wrong!
