The night we moved in we ran the hot tap and we filled a whole bath before we got any hot water coming through and the radiators started getting hot when the central heating was not on, the very next day we called British Gas and booked an engineer for a few days time, when he arrived he said the boiler is in a poor state and needs replacing due to the amount of faults/leaks/condition and the problems it has.

What type of boiler is it, Combi or system?

If Combi and it is heating radiators then it probably needs a valve replaced.

If it is a system boiler then there is an insulated tank in the house that requires to be heated up first, it is not instant hot water.

The amount of posts on here regarding BG engineers telling customers they need a new boiler, when in fact a simple repair from an other engineer makes a good and lasting boiler.

BG engineers get commission from BG selling you an overpriced new one.

Sounds like a combi with a sticking diverter valve. Make and model? If so, a cheap and easy fix. Get a proper GSR RGI in and not one from BG who is getting commission on every sales appointment they bring in. Which is why they charge typically 40% more than an independent.
Not a hope of getting the vendor to pay, the boiler was safe and working at last service.

A certificate is just like a vehicle MOT - passed at the time of inspection.
