Google Account necessary ?

You don't have to have a Google account to use the tablet, it will run quite happily without one.
However don't expect to be able to update anything or install new apps.It does look to be the best way - also - it should transfer her email account settings if I create the same account on her old tablet, shouldn't it ?
You've said in your second paragraph the original tablet never needed an account to download or update apps. So if that never had an account (according to you), how do you propose to transfer it? You can't transfer nothing to something.0 -

But it doesn't work like that.
The tablet has to be signed into a Google account already to get apps and updates. You setting up a new one isn't going to transfer anything because all that stuff is held in the Google account that the old Tablet is already signed into.
You need to find out what account the old Tablet is signing into, then sign into the new one with that. failing that the only other thing you can do is create a new account and then go around manually grabbing the apps from the Play Store.0 -
Thats what I meant - since the old tablet does not have an account associated with it - I will have to create an account on the old one and a matching account on the new one and transfer across
I am aware that apps do not come across - but (stock) email should !!
edit
Just discovered that my wifes email (gotadsl.co.uk) no longer allows new devices to be set up - the server is no longer accepting new devices - so have to use new server settings ([FONT=Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]mail.overssl.net) - so maybe it is not worth using the above procedure and just create a new account on the new tablet......

gotadsl.co.uk is now TalkTalk Business. It appears to have been part of Nildram which through all the various mergers over the years has ended up in the hands of TalkTalk. You probably won't have been able to add to it for a long while now.
Can't you just use a Gmail account for the tablet and have done with it? You don't have to use it for email.0
