DVLA Vehicle Tax Refund, rules change? Scam?
Hi,I have sold a car on 29/03/19 which I licensed for 12 months on 06/03/19.I sent off V5 expecting 11 months VED refund but only given 10 months pro rata. I’m sure I have sold a car close to month end before and recieved the refund for remaining months from date of sales date not date DVLA recieve my V5 with change of owner. Has there been a recent rule change or is the DVLA trying to cheat me?

The refund is calculated from the date DVLA gets your information.0

I realise now (too late) that you can inform them of a sold car online but as I said I’m sure I have sold a car on the last day of month and posted the V5 and still recieved the refund from sale date and wondered if they have changed the rules recently.0

Not a scam - just how it is.

Not a scam just a rip off,it looks like it may have changed when they made the licence non transferable. They could make it a lot clearer that this had changed and you need to inform them online if selling close to month end as sending in the V5 can take a few days. Why should the date of sale not be used as they did previously, that is the date you are no longer the registered keeper. As I sold my car on 29th March and the new owner licensed it on that date and they refuse to refund me for April they have had double tax for March and April.0

If you had notified the DVLA online of the change of owners then you would of received a refund for April as well.0 -
Yes I would have recieved it for April and I would have done it online if I’d known about it but they don’t advertise this anywhere which I would say is a deliberate ploy to catch you out.0

If you have a fairly recent V5, it says on the back of the "selling privately" section, when it's giving instruction on how to notify DVLA of the sale. Earlier ones don't have that because they were printed before it was an option.0
