Why would someone "in Germany" hack your account and then have the item sent to your own home address?

Dont know and dont care, maybe its an EU-amazon conspiracy to generate more income since the refund I'd receive by sending it back is less than what its cost me

Turn on two factor authentication to provide extra protection for you amazon account.

    Everyone should do this.

Come September when the EU rules on 2 factor (2FA) on all online purchases come into force it is going to be mandatory to contact you by some second independent method to confirm the purchase.
All part of their payment services directive No 2 (PSD2)

So if you don't have mobile reception in your home for that 2nd Factor or wherever you are when you make a purchase you had one of..
    1. get mobile coverage sorted /?get a mobile booster now that they are legal.
2 Get wifi-calling sorted - if your mobile Co, tarriff and phone allows it
    3. Hope that some other authorization method will be allowed for the second factor such as an automated voice call to your landline.

..going to really mess up Amazon and Paypal one-click ordering process though!

I think there is going to be some exclusion for low value purchases - perhaps and I'm guessing now below the current contactless card limit?

Thanks Lorian & Uxb1, i discovered that Amazon had this after trying to sort all this out. Too late now though. I dont mind the extra security, rather that than have a hacker rack up debts i cant afford. Would have enabled it from the start if i knew it was there when i created the account.

So, email from Amazon.de claiming they don't know where my account was accessed from and that it wasn't through any amazon website(really?), and to contact my bank which i did who promptly cancel my card and more or less accused me of fraud too if i continue to pursue the claim.

In the meantime my account is disabled and after a couple more calls to customer services to gain access again i find the book which was bought; paid for and sent via the german site has vanished from the 2019 recent orders, along with all the relevant order information and browsing activity. For people thinking i ordered it in the first place then if it wasn't fraudulent activity on an unknown persons part then why would amazon do that? The only proof i have of it all now is the book, credit card bill, invoice and delivery information i printed out

To me it looks like Amazon are covering tracks and have stuck their head in the sand to deny it ever happened.

If you had a giftcard balance make sure you still have it

and check for a potential "elsewhere" breach - try your email address at https://haveibeenpwned.com/

There was never any giftcard balance on it. I hadn't even used or visited amazon.de before all this

Seems after no help at all from my bank and more complaining to amazon.de they have reinstated the offending item back onto the recent purchases. So looks like i am now able to, and shall have to return it to Germany at my expense. So have to wait and see what problems arise from refunding to a cancelled credit card.

This shouldn't be a problem. The credit card account stays open for some time (in case there are any payment authorities etc. When you get the refund call the customer services and ask them to transfer money to your current account.
