tenant referencing/ credit check

My long term tenant is moving out soon and I will be getting a new tenant(s). Not having done it for a long time, what is the best way of checking their suitability. Previous was brilliant but I went mainly on gut instinct! ( I know,I know) The property is managed entirely by me & I am not a member of Landlords Association, etc.
Any help appreciated, GM and all you others who give such good advice.

I've just moved in a tenant using Openrent and I really recommend them, the whole process was extremely simple (and very cheap compared to the £600 quote I got from my old agent).
I paid for the "rentnow" package which does the whole lot from advertising to contract creation and signing. The referencing gets done by them and they send out a report (either a short background and credit check, or a longer one with previous LL and employment check)0 -
Use one of the many tennat check services (Homelet etc - google them they are all muc the same).
Personally check employment/income. Don't just ring the number for their boss though - could be their brother! Previous LL worth talking to though might be desperate to get rid of a dodgy tenant.....
If you're going to self-manage, do not get a tenant-find agent to deal with deposit - it just means the deposit is in the agent's name which is a hassle later.0
