Furniture paint or ordinary gloss/satin finish

I have several pieces of useful furniture which are looking tired and shabby, and could do with refurbishment. None is antique.

I’m planning to remove the old varnish and do little repairs, but how to finish them? Some may just be waxed, but for others I had been thinking gloss or satin finish paint, but then I see various brands of “furniture paint”. Can anyone comment on the relative virtues of these?

Depends what you are resurfacing.

I've done both varnish and paint - for wooden furniture - dulex satinwood gives a good finish. For varnish Danish Oil

The trick is really buff well after sanding, then to let it fully dry between coats, then resand, buff and give a final coat.

The buffing is really important as all the dust being removed gives a good finish

Coincidentally my preferences are Dulux Satinwood for paint and Danish Oil to replace varnish!



I've used both several times - just make sure you get of the old varnish first for the Danish Oil. I have looked at the specialist paints but as I've had good results with normal paint they seem to be an expensive solution to a problem which I'm not sure exists......

My neighbour painted her old pine bits and pieces with Zinsser BIN and then used a satin wood - it looks really good and was stuff she was going to ditch. I've used Zinsser and must say you can paint it straight on without prep....although prep is probably better to do.
