Low, but not zero, standing charge for gas

Options
We currently only use electricity, our gas supply is capped. They were replacing the gas main in the street but would only do the spur to our house for free if we got a meter fitted. We agreed to this, and plan to pay a gas standing charge, but not use any gas, for a few years before we sell the house, because a house without gas will be harder to sell, and it would cost the new owners £700-£1000 to trench in a new pipe.

So I'm looking for a supplier with a low standing charge, but not zero, as no-one would take us on for no payment. Current supplier of electricity would charge £96 p/a, so looking to beat that.

Just use the lowest consumption that the comparison site will take - you will build up a small credit which you eventually will get back.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

You won't incur any standing charge until you have the meter installed/are on supply.

Once you are on supply, you can switch to any supplier & tariff

Switches should not take longer than 21 days

21days even at £96 a year, if not worth worrying about, when you are saving £700-£1000 :money:

Use a comparison site to find who to switch to
  • The problem with comparison sites is their input checkers reject low gas values. Uswitch won't go below £90 usage for example. I would prefer a gas only contract, as our electricity is white meter, which is a can of worms to move.

Are any other switching sites more tolerant?

I'm not sure why you think you wouldn't be able to sign up to ebico with a zero standing charge and pay nothing? Are you unable to use gas even if you wanted to? Can you use 1kWh?

Anyway, it doesn't matter what you enter for your expected usage. You can just enter that you will use 500kWh or whatever, but you should probably choose a plan with payment on receipt of bill, so that you don't set yourself up with a direct debit.

You don't sign a contract saying you have to use X amount of gas. The bill will be calculated on your actual usage, so when you need to report your meter readings you just truthfully say you used 0kWh. If they don't believe you invite them to send round a meter reader...
