Not sold mortage payment protection

I bought my first house 3 years ago as a single applicant with a child. I went through an estate agent to set up mortgage, life insurance and home insurance.

In the last 8 months, I've became unable to work due to illness. On contacting insurance company (Aviva), they told me I don't have mortgage payment protection cover yet I don't remember having this option fully explained to me?

Surely the whole point is that I was guaranteed cover? But the assistant at Aviva said there's no such thing as guaranteed cover??

Help! Don't know what to do

If you had insurance, you would have policy documents for each one.

What do they say you are covered for?

A lot of companies no longer retail PPI. Especially restricted advice firms (most estate agent brokers are not independent but restricted). If you use a restricted advice firm then you get a restricted service.

That said, many independent advice firms have stopped retailing MPPI as well because of the PPI issue and the FCA have absolutely no problem with that.

There is no such thing. Life assurance is life assurance. It isnt anything else.

    Nothing.
Unfortunately, the PPI issue has meant that people with a genuine need for a PPI policy often no longer get it because firms are scared to retail it as they believe that same person will complain later.

  • If you are unable to work due to illness then you should probably look to see if you can get any benefits that would cover the mortgage interest payments. It's in the government's own interests that you don't become homeless.

I seem to recall that these benefits are now only available after 39-weeks of illness and the interest on the mortgage is covered by a loan which requires repayment. It's pretty dire
