Ground Preparation For Climbing Frame

I will be buying a climbing frame for my boys and want to know what ground work preparations I need to do before installing it as I want spend a bit of time getting it right so it lasts years.

I want to know what’s the best in terms of drainage, weed control and what sort of material to put down for protection etc.

thanks.

This is more of a 'dont do what I did' post but we put a weed control fabric down and covered it in bark chippings when the kids were young - no idea why I thought that was a good idea at the time, possibly it was an inexpensive option, but a big mistake.

Soggy as anything in the winter and hard and spiky in the hot weather - couldn't wait to get rid of the bark.

We installed a climbing frame on an area of grass. We did no ground preparation other than digging holes for ground anchors.

After installing we put rubber matting on top of the grass - it's the type with holes that the grass grows through, so from a distance it just looks like the rest of the (rather scruffy) lawn. They were the type advertised here https://www.grassmats.co.uk/product/playground-safety-grass-mats/ but we bought them somewhere else.
