Hi,

I have an Astra GTC 2.0 Diesel car covered by their lifetime warranty.
I recently had it in to Peter Vardy my local Vauxhall to have the warranty re-activated for another year, this was done, no problems there.
They also carried out a health check and found two problems. I had the car serviced two weeks earlier from a trusted local garage and they never mentioned any problems.

The problems are an engine oil leak, which will cost £900 but is going to be covered by the warranty and a small leak coming from the reverse switch, this is not covered. I am told the switch is to be replaced and is going to cost me £166 to have done.

I am awaiting a list of things that are covered, Vauxhall customer service at Vauxhall head office is going to email this, I am told.

Googling on line I have found this:

Covered components of the Lifetime warranty
The Lifetime Warranty is valid only for the following components of the vehicle:
Engine and transmission and electronic parts of the powertrain such as ECU.
Powertrain: drive shafts, differential gears, electronic parts of the powertrain.
Steering: steering gear, pump, electronic parts of the steering system.
Brake system: ABS/ESP system including hydraulic unit, brake booster, main and wheel brake cylinders, vacuum pump, brake proportioning valve.
Fuel system: fuel pump, injection pump, electronic parts of the fuel injection systems.
Exhaust system: turbo charger including actuator, electronic parts of the exhaust system, Lambda Sond.
Cooling system: radiator, heater core, thermostat, water pump, radiator for the automatic transmission, cooling fan.
Safety systems: electronic control unit for airbags and for seat-belt tensioners.
Air-conditioning: compressor, evaporator, condenser, fan.
Electrical equipment: electronic control units excluding navigation, lighting and radar system, but including repair by flashing new software, generator, starter, electronic parts of the ignition system, ignition wiring, central electric units, instrument cluster unit, board computer, wiper motors, heating ventilator, horn, electronic parts of the window lifters, front/ rear window heaters (excluding breakage), electronic parts of the sunroof, the central door locking and the convertible roof.

Wiring harnesses, hoses and connectors are excluded.

Furthermore, not covered are all service maintenance repairs and wear and tear parts. Excluded is the replacement of components that have failed due to wear and tear.

The warranty does not extend to the fixing of consequential damage caused by the covered components mentioned above.

The important bit for me being
"Powertrain: drive shafts, differential gears, electronic parts of the powertrain."

Surely the above would include the reverse switch then.

The car has done 43,000 miles and is serviced with Vauxhall parts each year.

Any one like to share their opinion here please.

No, the reverse light switch isn't an "electronic part of the powertrain".

It would come under "Electrical Equipment", but isn't one of the explicitly listed components - the same as any other light switch.

So you reckon I wouldn't have a case to argue here then?

I would get the trusted local garage to change the reverse switch. I'd expect change out of £80-£100.

They can be bought for £5-£10 on line.
