Halifax Credit Cards: Redistributing Credit Limits

Before I try this, out of curiosity, has anyone redistributed credit limits among Halifax credit cards? If so, did it work ok? Did it cause any problems?

According to the Halifax site, it can be done via Telephone Banking, but I can't get the IVR speech recognition system to understand the word "redistribute" - it thinks I'm saying "reduce" which isn't what I want to do at all. Then it asks me to enter my card number - but there are two cards involved and it doesn't specify which one to enter.

Are there better words I can say to the IVR to help me get to the right place?

  • Yes it can be done.

Just say “other” or “something else”.

It doesn’t matter as you’ll inevitably go through to the same agent

I've used the phrase "merge credit limits". It was either Santander or Tesco, can't remember. Try that with Halifax?

Just to report back, I had no luck with the IVR (used all sorts of words, but couldn't make it understand), so I just said "something else" to get put through to a person.

Confirmed it would have no effect on the 0% promotions on either card - the only thing it affects is the credit limit.

Initially asked for the maximum possible redistribution (which is 90% of the credit limit on the source card) but this wasn't allowed because it would take the target card's limit above £15,000. So I just moved enough across to make the target card's limit £15,000.

The redistribution takes up to 3 working days to take effect, so I'll be eagerly checking online every couple of hours now :-)

Slightly disappointed I couldn't move more, but every little helps.

Edit: And about 1 hour after the phone call, I received a text message to say it's happened, and sure enough the new limits are now showing on Online Banking :-)

    /me is happy.

I didn’t know the max limit on Halifax Card was 15k.

I know you can have two cards so I expect 15k on each of you have the income.

I would hazard a guess that it isn't a "hard" maximum, more of an initial max for a new card. The card in question has only been opened a week.
